Foldable phones are slowly becoming part of the smartphone ecosystem – for some, that is, because they are usually pretty expensive. Those fond of the idea of a huge screen without having to fit a tablet in their pockets is eagerly awaiting the release of a more affordable foldable.
And the first step in this direction has recently been made by Xiaomi, a smartphone maker with a habit of selling flagships at a friendly price with the release of the Mi Mix Fold, its first foldable phone.
The phone looks great and has a price tag that’s friendlier than most others in its category – around 10,000 yuan (or $1,500) for the base model with 12 GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.
The only problem with it is its availability: for now, it’s only been launched in Mainland China. But this may change pretty soon: sources claim that the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is on its way to India as well.
Flagship and innovation
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 5G SoC paired with up to 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage, equipped with 5G and WiFi 6 connectivity, and capable of handling LPDDR5 at 3200MHz.
It has two screens. Its external screen is a pretty standard 6.5” AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and support for HDR10+. Its foldable screen is worthy of attention: when unfolded, it becomes an 8” display with a WQHD+ resolution, perfect for media and multitasking.
Imagine watching a football match in the Betway app while keeping your live bets open on the same screen, and also chatting with your friends – all this on the same screen. But its benefits go beyond just watching movies and multitasking – there are a great many things that can be done on a massive 4:3 screen that fits into your pocket.
One of the innovations introduced with the Mi Mix Fold is its quad-speaker system – a world-first, according to Xiaomi – introduced along with a smart speaker algorithm that offers 3D spatial panoramic sound.
Another innovative feature built into the Mi Mix Fold is its 8MP telephoto camera, part of its main camera assembly, which has a liquid lens – also a world-first.
This special lens allows the macro camera to offer 3x optical zoom while keeping its dimensions minimal and will resist even the most extreme temperatures you can encounter.
India, and the rest of the world
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold was launched earlier this month in Mainland China with no official date of a launch in the rest of the world.
Now, in turn, the watchful eyes of a tipster who discovered that the phone is listed in a global IMEI database with the model number M2011J18G.
This is an interesting fact because Xiaomi usually puts a C at the end of its China-only models, while the G is reserved for – you guessed it – “Global”. The same tipster discovered the phone in an Indian IMEI repository as well.
Specialists expect the handset to be launched in India sometime after the release of the Mi 11 series.
