Design and Display
Obviously, it is an all piece of amusing wonder! The phone features a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED display with a Ultra Full-HD+ 2316 x 1080 screen resolution with a 338ppi, which boasts of a 91.24% screen-to-body ratio.
Coming to the Nex display settings, the phone uses a 19.3:9 aspect ratio. Allowing users to see almost everything, in-depth movies, photos, intensive games etc on the screen in a wider immersive view.
The bezels on the phone is radically slimmer and thinner, looking round the screen, you would notice little borders around the edge of the screen. But everything isn’t all gone, there is a slight chin on the bottom of the phone but it is really minimal!
Did you notice, there is no earpiece speaker on the front? Actually, Vivo incorporated the sound by using a Screen Soundcasting technology. It is being set into the display itself, turning the screen into a speaker.
And the company says; “it enhances sound quality with more powerful bass and softer, smoother treble.” And it is something similar to the Xiaomi Mi Mix.
There is no physical front selfie shooter, as the company used the tech on Vivo Apex, when in need of the selfie camera, it automatically rises out of the body of the phone. Available in both Diamond Black and Ruby Red.
It partially explains how much space the selfie snapper takes on the screen display of smartphones. And there is an under-display glass fingerprint scanner, which is powered by the third-gen version of the tech found in the X21 claims to be 50 percent more accurate and 10 percent faster. It weighs 199g and 7.98mm thick.
Camera and connectivity
The Nex handset sports a dual camera setup on the back, consisting of a 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras with a dual-pixel sensor for better low-light shots.
Thankfully, it uses AI to help you identify scenes and take better shots by automatically adjusting the settings. Both have optical image stabilization (OIS).
And there is a 8-megapixels selfie camera with f/2.0. It pops out in under a second, Vivo says and retracts once you’ve finished snapping.
It sports 2G, 3G, 4G, WiFi (triple band), Bluetooth v5.0, A-GPS, microUSB 2.0, 3.5mm headphone port, USB Type-C, as its network and connectivity.
Performance and Battery
The Vivo Nex runs on powerful Qualcomm AI Engine; Snapdragon 845 processor, and backs it up with 8GB of RAM topped off by an Adreno 630 GPU.
Incredibly, the phone arrives with a 256GB of internal storage and everything is fueled by a huge 4000mAh battery and support for fast charging. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo humming based on the company’s FunTouch 4.0.
Fortunately, the company also unveiled another souped up version of the Nex S, it features 8GB of memory and 128GB of internal storage. There is another mid-range device with Snapdragon 710, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.
There’s also a voice assistant called Jovi to help users with tasks, though this will likely only be available in China. Vivo’s own personal voice assistant which works on artificial intelligence technology.
There is a dedicated button on the side – just like Samsung’s Bixby. The button lets you activate Jovi and ask for its help.
Jovi is equipped and enhanced with various features, on your voice command, it can identify images, launch apps, smart map reading, encyclopedia, shopping, translation, scanning, and supports numerous other voice commands.
Pricing and Availability
And now, for the pricing and availability. The phone would only be available in China, it is priced at 4,998 yuan / $780. That is almost N280k in Nigeria currency, Ksh 89,000 in Kenya shillings.
And when it comes to price comparison, the phone is a lot cheaper than iPhone X (8,316-yuan) and much more expensive than the Xiaomi Mi 8 (2,699-yuan).
The Vivo Nex did not just paves way for future bezel-less phones, it also gave a didactic experiment to what Lenovo Z5 can’t do!
