It is the Vivo APEX 2020 concept, which might actually see the light of day in a future event. The APEX 2020 was announced by the company with the under-screen front camera, 60W wireless charging, and 6.45-inch FHD+ 120° FullView edgeless display.
Over the previous year, VIVO started with various concept ideas that gave birth to the pop-up selfie camera, in-display fingerprint sensor. There was even the portless and buttonless phone which is available on shelves.
VIVO was meant to unveil it’s latest Apex concept phone at the now-canceled Mobile World Congress due to Coronavirus, but VIVO said that it was expecting to show off and take the company at its word that the phone does actually exist somewhere in Shenzhen.
The new Vivo APEX 2020 draws the two biggest innovations of each of the previous Apex phones. You can see the in-display selfie camera lens, which is under the glass and removes any idea of a notch, display cutout, or pop-up camera.
VIVO APEX 2020 arrives with a 6.45-inch 120° FullView warp-around display with 88-degree curves that bends at an angle of up to 120° on both sides, which is far beyond what we saw on the Vivo’s flagship phone, Nex 3.
It is still a button-less and port-less phone, which uses a press-sensitive button on the sides, a seamless body, and Vivo also integrated its third-generation Screen SoundCasting Technology.
That is just the least yet, there is an in-screen selfie camera, which integrates the 16-megapixel selfie camera with 4-in-1 super-pixel photosensitive chip right into the display. But OPPO and Xiaomi showcased something identical last year.
The 4-in-1 super-pixel photosensitive chip ensures more photo quality, and VIVO claimed that it’s increased the light transmittance of the screen right above the front camera to six times of the other part of the screen, and effectively reduces optical interference, diffraction, and stray flashes through a series of algorithm optimizations to increase the photography quality.
VIVO also explained that the 16-megapixel module can fit inside the 8.8mm-thick phone because its 6.2mm thick due to its periscope design. There is what Vivo calls “continuous optical zoom,” and actual moving lens elements from 5x to 7.5x magnification, which is the first in the Smartphone world.
While on the back sits a gimbal-stabilizing 48MP main camera system, which stabilizes all the lenses by a mechanical gimbal and ensures super-smooth video recording. Vivo said that gimbal-lens is 200% more effective than traditional flagship OIS.
When your phone gets battery low notification, understands that you can’t charge it via USB Type-C or any wired charger, because it is a portless and buttonless phone.
But you can easily use wireless solutions, as the Vivo APEX 2020 supports wireless charging speeds of 60W, which takes one minute to charge each 100mAh of battery. You can’t transfer data to/from the phone wired also, you also need wireless option.
This is quite different from what Xiaomi offered via its 30W wireless fast charging, charging 4,000mAh battery up to 50% in 25 minutes, and 69 minutes to charge the phone fully.
But Vivo said that the APEX 2020 60W Wireless Super FlashCharge feature can easily recharge a handset with a 2000mAh battery in only 20 minutes, and more.
Vivo said that it is a 5G device, featuring a 1080p, Android 10 in black and white, to be powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor, Adreno 650 GPU, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.
Anyways, we still have no idea how, and when Vivo wants to implement this idea. But have this in mind that the APEX 2020 might never make it out as a commercial phone and being on phone shelves. But we are quite sure that the 60W wireless super flash charge might make it out first.
