During its single online event, Sony announced its latest flagship devices – Sony Xperia 1 III and 5 III with 120Hz screens, and alongside, the company also launched the mid-range Sony Xperia 10 III with Snapdragon 690 processor.
These phones are dubbed as the company’s latest Smartphones, where the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III are complete flagship mobile handsets driven by Snapdragon 888, succeeding their predecessors – Xperia 1 II and Xperia 5 II.

Sony Xperia 10 III
This is the Sony Xperia 10 III with a 6-inch 21:9 Wide Full HD+ OLED screen display with a standard 60Hz refresh rate and 120Hz Touch sampling rate, HDR10 support and it is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
It also comes with a Triluminous display for mobile, it was first seen on Sony TV, allowing TVs to reproduce a color gamut that’s 50% wider than conventional LCDs while rendering colors that are more saturated, vivid, and accurate.
There is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor scanner, hybrid Dual SIM, IPX5/IPX8 Water-resistant, IP6X Dustproof (IP6X), 8.3mm thick and it weighs 169g. It is available in Black, Blue, White, and Pink color options.
Actually, the Xperia 10 III is the third refresh of 2019’s Xperia 10 and it is also the first mid-range Xperia with 5G connectivity. Others includes 5G (sub-6GHz), 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 2.4GHz / 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS / GLONASS, and NFC.
The camera setup is unique and impressive, featuring an f/1.8 12-megapixels rear camera with LED flash, 27mm equivalent lens, and it is a 1/2.8″ sensor, and 75° wide-angle lens.
In support is an f/2.4 8-megapixels telephoto lens with 1/4″ sensor for up to 10x hybrid zoom, f/2.2 8-megapixels 1/4″ 120° ultra-wide-angle lens and a front 8-megapixels 1/4″ sensor, 1.12μm pixel size, 78° wide-angle lens.
Similar to the more premium Xperia models, it also supports 10fps bursts with auto-exposure adjusting for each shot. There is a 3.5mm headphone jack with LDAC, Hi-Res audio support, DSEE Ultimate, and Stereo Recording.
It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 8nm Mobile Platform with one of its CPU Core clockings at 2GHz processor counts, there is Adreno 619L GPU, and runs on Android 11 OS out of the box.
It comes in a single 6GB LPDDR4x RAM with 128GB (UFS 2.1) storage, allowing you to store more files, such as music, photos, movies, documents, annotations, and more. Fortunately, it is expandable up to 1TB via a MicroSD card slot.
It packs a 4500mAh battery with up to 30W (USB PD) fast charging and comes with Xperia Adaptive Charging, Battery Care, STAMINA Mode. The Xperia 10 III will be available around early summer and pricing was not revealed.
Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III
Both devices are almost identical to each other, both are powered by the flagship Snapdragon 888 chipset from Qualcomm with hybrid dual SIM slots so you can easily expand the storage through a microSD card if you need to.
The Xperia 1 III comes in 12GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB storage and the Xperia 5 III in 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB versions. There is a 4,500mAh battery with support for up to 30W fast charging, boasting of 50% in 30 minutes.
Sony promised 3-year-long battery life, however, the Xperia 5 III lacks supports for Qi wireless charging but the Sony Xperia 1 III comes with the capability and both phones are rated IP65/68 dust and water-resistant.
These phones come with stereo loudspeakers and 240Hz motion blur reduction in supported games. There is the Low gamma raiser that really helps with visibility in shadows, while the sound equalizer helps you better hear gunshots and footsteps.
And there is an upgrade on the microphone input during voice chat, Sony removed the background noise and clears up the speech. For better gaming sessions, there is support for game recording up to 1080p@120fps.
There is the Sony Rewind time recording, that constantly records the last 30s during gameplay, and that might sound familiar, as it is identical to Nvidia’s highlight recording. Hit record and it’ll save your highlight of the game.
Let shift to the display, as the differences set between these two great phones. The Xperia 5 III uses a 6.1-inch 1080p Full HD+ OLED HDR Display with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection.
The Sony Xperia 1 III sports 6.5-inch 4K OLED HDR Display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and comes with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. It comes with a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 10-bit tonal gradation, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
Xperia 1 III packs a frosted glass back, and these come with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Both come with an f/2.0 8-megapixels front-facing camera with 1/ 4″ Exmor RS sensor, 1.12μm pixel size, and 84° wide-angle lens.
Around the back of both phones is the same primary 12-megapixels 1/1.7″ sensor coupled with an f/1.7 OIS lens, 12-megapixels ultrawide snapper, a 1/2.6″ imager with f/2.2 aperture, and autofocus support.
As expected, there are a few tweaks, support for ZEISS lenses with T coating, real-time Eye AF on top of the already existing Eye AF that works on animals and humans, thanks to the new software features.
There is the Optical SteadyShot and 4K recording at 120fps for those crisp slow-motion takes. Lastly, a 12-megapixels 1/2.9″ Sony telephoto sensor can switch between 70mm and 105mm (around 2.9x and 4.4x optical zoom).
With either f/2.3 (70mm), f/2.8 (105mm) lens, you can get shot up to 12.5x hybrid zoom and the Digital zoom can now reach the equivalent of 300mm, unlike 200mm on the Xperia 1 II and 5 II. Sony calls it “AI super-resolution zoom”.
Both phones support up to 20fps AF/AE tracking burst, and there is the Cinema Pro, powered by CineAlta offers a 21:9 Movie recording in 4K HDR that promises the best results — even in backlit scenes or low light.
The cameras are almost identical, but Sony planted an extra lens on the Xperia 1 III – a 3D ToF camera that supports real-time Eye autofocus tracking. These come with 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS, NFC, and USB 3.1 Type-C.
Sony Xperia 1 III is quite thick at 7.62mm, weighs 187.1g, and comes in Frosted Black and Frosted Purple color. While the Xperia 5 III is 8.2mm thick, weighs 168g, and comes in Black, Green, and Pink colors. These will be available during the Summer.
