MediaTek Dimensity 820 chips announced with support for up to 120Hz displays

MediaTek Dimensity 820 7nm Octa-Core SoC announced with a built-in 5G, support for up to 120Hz displays along with higher CPU clock speeds, and extra GPU core than its predecessor, the Dimensity 800 chips.

The new Dimensity 820 chips come as a more powerful version of the Dimensity 800, which was introduced earlier this year with a more improved 5G connectivity.

It comes with a four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores clocking at 2.6GHz, which is bigger than the 2GHz in the Dimensity 800 while the 2GHz Arm Cortex-A55 cores are still intact.

But there is an Arm Mali G57 GPU graphics plus HyperEngine 2.0 enhancements, with 33% better gaming performance than “direct alternatives.” esp from the Mali-G57 MC4 on the Dimensity 800 and both supports LPDDR4x up to 16GB, UFS.

MediaTek touts the Dimensity 820 7nm chipset as “the World’s Most Power-Efficient Smartphone 5G Modem Design” and boasts of 5G-integrated SoC for premium 5G smartphones that are comprehensively faster, better featured and offer a superb power efficiency.

However, it comes with support for 120Hz high frame-rate displays, 2520 x 1080 (Full HD+) at 21:9, while leading HDR features with MediaTek MiraVision showcases the most vivid visuals in videos and streams.

Like its predecessor, it also supports 32MP+16MP, 80MP, HDR-ISP (3+1) / Video HDR / Video NR / Video Bokeh / Video EIS / AI-Shutter, 2160p (2160 x 1080), h.264, h.265 / HEVC 4K 30fps, FHD 120fps, and HD 240fps.

It also comes with support for MediaTek’s Imagiq 5.0, it is a flagship-class, HDR-native image signal processor (ISP) that supports up to four concurrent cameras and up to 80MP sensors, giving brands more design flexibility.

There is the multi-frame 4K Video HDR support also, which easily records stunning 4K HDR video even in bright and dark environments. The chip automatically captures frames at different exposures and intelligently fuses them into a single video stream, all in real-time.

For connectivity, the new SoC comes with an integrated 5G NR (sub-6GHz) modem with MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave technologies, 5G UltraSave Network Environment Detection, and 5G UltraSave OTA Content Awareness.

The 5G modem design also uses dynamic bandwidth part (BWP) adaption and connected mode discontinuous reception (C-DRX) power-saving technologies. And also supports dual SIM, dual standby (DSDS) 5G technology for access to the fastest speeds, and Voice over New Radio (VoNR) services on both SIMs.

MediaTek said that the new Dimensity 820 is designed for global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America, and Europe.

Along with others, it arrives with an integrated Dual-Band Wi-Fi 5 (a/b/g/n/ac/ax), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS + Glonass + Beidou + Galileo, FM radio. Dimensity 820 is actually the company’s latest mid-range SoC and will be commercial on the Redmi 10X. Where Xiaomi confirmed that the device will be unveiled on the 26th of May in China.
