HUAWEI announces the Kirin 990 7nm and Kirin 990 5G with integrated 5G-modem

Finally, Chinese Smartphone brand, Huawei announces the Huawei Kirin 990 7nm and Kirin 990 5G 7nm EUV Octa-Core SoCs with 16-Core Mali-G76 GPU. It was recently announced at IFA event.

Even though, Samsung has recently announced the Exynos 980 8nm with built-in 5G modem, the Huawei’s Kirin 990 will arrive on the market quickly.

The HUAWEI HiSilicon Kirin 990 7nm and HiSilicon Kirin 990 5G 7nm EUV Octa-Core SoCs are the company’s next-generation mobile SoC with slightly improved for better efficiency.

Like the Apple’s upcoming A13 chip, the Huawei’s new SoC is using the brand new 7nm FinFET Plus EUV node by TSMC. Anyways, slapping a 5G modems on SoC is now thing.

With the integrated 5G modem on the new Huawei’s SoC, the HiSilicon Kirin 990 is expected to optimized the power consumption and less RAM usage.

The Kirin 990 is based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturer Company’s (TSMC) 7nm process and it is also the first SoC with more than 10.3 billion transistors.

Huawei Kirin 990 is a promising mobile chipset, and appears as the most powerful and the most compact system on a chip today. Being 26% smaller than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 and 36% smaller than Samsung’s Exynos 9820.

Kirin 990 processor inside makes use of 8 cores – 2x big Cortex-A76 @2.86GHz, 2x middle Cortex-A76 @2.36GHz and 4x small Cortex-A55 @1.95GHz. And it uses Mali-G76 GPU like the previous Kirin 980 but with 6 more cores making for 16 in total.

The Kirin 990 5G comes with an integrated 5G modem that offers up to 2.3Gbps download speed and 1.25 Gbps upload speed. Combined with LTE, this will offer up to 3.3Gbps download speed and up to 1.32Gbps upload speed.

Being an AI-powered processor, it comes with advanced video processing capability, block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) professional-level hardware noise reduction (NR) for capturing brighter and sharper images in low light environments.

Going ahead of that, the new Face AR enables modeling of faces, real-time tracking, expression capture, and analysis of heart rate, respiration rate and other health data. The chipset is capable of recording 8K HDR videos at 30fps.

Nevertheless, the new Huawei Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G SoCs will power the Mate 30 series that is arriving at an event in Germany soon.
