During the HONOR 30S launch event, HUAWEI introduces its mid-range HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G SoC with one ARM Cortex-A76 prime core clocked at 2.36GHz, and boasts of up to 27% improved performance over the older chip -Kirin 810.
When comparing the Kirin 820 SoC CPU / GPU performance to Kirin 810 and Snapdragon 765G, you will find almost the same in terms of CPU performance as the Kirin 980.
The newly announced chipset is targeted at the mid-range phones. Smartphone companies boasted about launching affordable 5G phones, and we’ve started seeing the likes of Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G with Snapdragon 765G.
As expected, the new Kirin 820 5G SoC supports 5G dual-mode, five frequencies – n1, n3, n41, n78, and n79, multi-dimensional searches, such as network search, uplink/downlink speed, and dual SIM experience.
It comes with a built-in modem that supports both SA and NSA networks. And you can set SIM 1 to 5G while the second SIM slot is set to VoLTE or you can have both SIM slots set to VoLTE.
It uses the same Kirin ISP 5.0 as the Kirin 990 and supports BM3D SLR image noise reduction and video dual-domain noise reduction and support for 4K video capture at 60fps.
The HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G platform is based on a 7nm architecture and consists of four ARM Cortex A76 big cores and four ARM Cortex A55 little cores.
It arrives with one A76 core clocked at 2.36GB, while the other three are clocked at 2.22GHz and the other four smaller ARM Cortex-A55 cores are clocked at 1.84GHz. This is quite different from the Kirin 810 that had all of its A76 cores clocked at 2.2GHz.
Kirin 820 SoC makes use of a Mali-G57 6-core GPU, which offers 38% better performance over the Mali-G52 GPU on the Kirin 810. The ARM Mali-G57 MP6 GPU has a 38% gaming performance improvement over the previous generation.
It brings support for GPU Turbo and Kirin Gaming+ 2.0. Huawei has also packed in an in-house NPU with 1.33 TFLOPS computing power on the Kirin 820, which improves AI performance by 73% over the Kirin 810.
The major competitor of HiSilicon Kirin 820 5G SoC is the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G, which is targeted at affordable 5G phones. Anyways, the HONOR 30S is the first device to feature the new Kirin 820 5G chipset.
