Facebook says millions of data were stolen – How to check yours!

Unfortunately, the Social media Giant, Facebook still has some loopholes in its database structure. Last month, September, certain group of persons gained an unauthorized access to millions of Facebook’s user data. Tired of staying on Facebook, you can possibly leave Facebook.

The group persons used a foible and failing features known as Facebook’s “view as” and the millions of users, whose data was accessed has a method of confirming it. Anyways, Facebook has released an official keynote and update regarding the issue.

    What are the stolen information?

At first, it was reported that the bug affected 50million users account, but later on, the persons accessed a total of 30 millions users account. Basically, some information and details were stolen, profile data were retrieved. But fortunately, one million account were left untouched!

Information accessed on the remaining 14 million user account are:
    – Name
    – Email
    – Phone number
    – Gender
    – Religion
    – Location
    – Current device information

While the other 15 million Facebook user account is the 15 most recent searches. According to Guy Rosen, the VP of Product Management, he said “We saw an unusual spike of activity that began on September 14, 2018, and we started an investigation. On September 25, we determined this was actually an attack and identified the vulnerability. Within two days, we closed the vulnerability, stopped the attack, and secured people’s accounts by resetting the access tokens for people who were potentially exposed. As a precaution, we also turned off View As.”

However, the company explained how the attack was thought through, starting from the day one of noticing it, how it affected 400,000 people’s lists of friends, so on and forth. Thankfully, there was no data taken from third-party apps that has accessed to Facebook accounts.

Facebook definitely knows everything about the attack, the loophole portal “View As” and probably, the persons involved. It was also added in the press statement “We’re cooperating with the FBI, which is actively investigating and asked us not to discuss who may be behind this attack.”

How to check if your account was affected?

If you were among 50 million or 30 million Facebook account users, that were accessible by certain persons, then you are provided a portal where you can easily check and confirm:

To check, visit Facebook’s Help Center, then a notice at the bottom will explain whether your account was affected. And like the above image, Facebook will list out the information, details that were stolen by the persons.

Thankfully, your passwords don’t need be changed, messages shouldn’t be deleted, as none of those were stolen by the group of persons. But the Token which were used to log in has been cleared by Facebook. Anyways, if you were affected, Facebook has no further news for your next reaction. Stay tuned.
